Mapei and architecture: international case studies
Torre Velasca, Milan
After 18 months of work, the façade of Torre Velasca has been restored and returned to its original appearance through an intervention promoted by Hines. The project focused on the recovery of the external envelope, including the repair of the concrete and the reinstatement of the building’s characteristic pink-grey colour, which had been altered by decades of pollution.
The restoration of the building designed by BBPR required detailed analysis of the original materials. Mapei, in collaboration with CEAS and based on a project by Asti Architetti, developed a custom binder (Velasca binder) to reproduce the historic colour and texture, ensuring uniformity and long-term durability of the final result.
Guggenheim Museum, New York
The Guggenheim Museum in New York, an icon of organic architecture designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, underwent a conservation restoration on the occasion of its 50th anniversary, with the aim of preserving its original form, surfaces, and architectural details.
Following laboratory testing and diagnostic analysis, Mapei supported the intervention on the concrete structure and cracking, applying flexible mortars, elastic sealants, and high-performance protective finishes. The result is a structural and architectural restoration that combines heritage conservation, technological innovation, and LEED sustainability standards.
Louvre Museum, Abu Dhabi
The Louvre Abu Dhabi, designed by Jean Nouvel, reinterprets the Arab medina in a contemporary key. At the heart of the complex, a spectacular 180-metre dome filters natural light, creating a striking “rain of light” effect while providing protection from the sun.
Built on Saadiyat Island, the museum unfolds as an 87,000-square-metre city of art. In an extremely challenging climate, Mapei supplied advanced technical solutions for installing marble on complex substrates, ensuring strength, durability and long-term performance.
Mapei Sustainability: low-eenvironmental-impact materials for the construction industry
Sustainability is an integral part of Mapei’s industrial approach and guides the development of building products with a reduced environmental impact. Research focuses on lowering VOC emissions, optimising the use of resources, and improving the durability and life cycle of materials.
Drawing on experience gained on construction sites around the world, Mapei develops solutions that combine technical performance, safety and environmental responsibility, meeting the needs of a constantly evolving construction sector.
